Mental health Support Pathway

Prevention before intervention

“Wellbeing is attained little by little, and nevertheless is no little thing itself.” Citium Zeno.

Many things can impact your wellbeing and developing good habits is key to prevent any problems or escalations to mental health. There are some simple things that can be done to help take care of mental wellbeing and the five ways to wellbeing offer a good foundation to start with. These are:

The most successful people in the world understand the value of maintaining their wellbeing and it is the little things which can make a big difference to how we feel.

Maintain a Healthy Routine:

  • Ensure you get enough sleep (around 8-10 hours for teenagers) to stay alert and focused during the day.
  • Eat a balanced diet and stay hydrated to fuel your body and mind.
  • Stay active through regular exercise to boost mood and reduce stress.

Manage Stress:

  • Learn stress management techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, and time management.
  • Reach out to teachers, school counsellors, or support staff if you are feeling overwhelmed.

Stay Connected:

  • Maintain positive relationships with your peers and teachers.
  • Encourage open and honest communication with friends and family members about your feelings and concerns.

Set Realistic Goals:

  • Establish achievable academic and personal goals.
  • Break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps to reduce anxiety.

Seek Help When Needed:

  • If you are struggling academically, don’t hesitate to ask teachers for extra help or join study groups.
  • If you are experiencing emotional difficulties, talk to the school counsellor or reach out to external mental health services.

Maintain a Healthy Work-Life Balance:

  • Balance your study time with leisure and relaxation to prevent burnout.
  • Engage in hobbies and activities that bring you joy.

Internet and Social Media Use:

  • Be mindful of screen time and ensure that you’re not spending excessive hours on digital devices.
  • Be aware of the potential negative effects of social media and cyberbullying and report any concerns to school authorities.

Anti-Bullying and Respect:

  • We have a zero-tolerance policy for bullying. Report any instances of bullying immediately.
  • Treat everyone with respect and kindness, promoting a supportive school community.

Sleep and Nutrition

  • Prioritise healthy eating and a consistent sleep schedule to support your physical and mental health.

Resources and Support:

  • Our school counsellors are available to provide emotional support and guidance.
  • If you are experiencing personal difficulties, please reach out to your PT, a teacher, or another trusted adult at the school.

Peer Support and Clubs:

  • Consider joining clubs or peer support groups that align with your interests and passions. Our school offers many opportunities via session three after school.

Self-Care:

  • Regularly engage in self-care activities like reading, drawing, or listening to music to relax and recharge.

School Attendance and Wellbeing

There are occasions when pupils stay off school due to mental health reasons. Whilst there are times when this is necessary, please remember that school life can contribute significantly to your wellbeing. In school you can form social connections, develop self-confidence as you transition into adulthood and plan for your future.

Remember, your wellbeing is essential to your academic success. Please do not hesitate to seek help or talk to any member of the school staff if you are facing challenges or need support. We are here to help you succeed and thrive during your time at Walsall Academy.
