Vision Statement

The opportunities for students of Art and Design, on completion of full-time education, are enormous. Qualifications in Art and Design subjects are also accepted as entry into many other careers. Career prospects are available in the following fields: Ceramics, Textiles & Fashion, Product Design, Teaching, Interior Design, Theatre Design, Fine Arts, Television, Graphic Design, Advertising, Architecture, Publishing, Print Making, Illustration and Photography.

We aim to produce informed, independent and reflective art practitioners who can adapt their knowledge, understanding and skills for a variety of further education courses in Art and Design. You will undertake an intensive two year course in which you will have the opportunity to develop ideas supported by a rich programme of tutorials, artists’ workshops, technical workshops and critical studies.

Introduction video

Students will produce a portfolio of work that reflects a sustained and in-depth period of study, building upon the skills they have learnt in GCSE. Students will be encouraged to pursue their own lines of enquiry informed by guided cultural, contemporary and historical references through the 2 years of this linear course. They will explore a range of media such as painting and mixed media. This will enable students to produce exciting, creative and innovative pieces. Students will show evidence of trying to extend their own learning by viewing a range of artists and exploring a variety of techniques.

Autumn/Winter Term - Foundation

In the Year 12 Art curriculum, students embark on a dynamic and comprehensive learning journey across the academic year. The autumn term lays the foundation, ensuring a clear understanding of course expectations, with exemplar pieces guiding students toward excellence. As the season progresses, students to produce work inspired by artists.

Spring/Summer Term - Review Work

Moving into the spring term, students delve into the compilation of review work and artist reviews for their Personal Study, accompanied by visual illustrations. Simultaneously, a deepening exploration of the chiaroscuro technique begins, evolving as students use this knowledge to capture photographs in the distinctive style of Artists Two and Three. The summer term further extends this technique exploration, challenging students to emulate the styles of Artists Two and Three in their photographic compositions.

Personalised objectives

Throughout the academic year, personalised learning objectives are tailored to students’ chosen themes, fostering critical self-evaluation and analysis of artists’ works. Additionally, digital manipulation skills are honed through projects inspired by each of the three artists, ensuring a well-rounded and enriching artistic education.

In the Autumn/Winter term, students will conclude their Personal Study. The exam paper will present learners with a selection of seven themes, each offering a range of written and/or visual starting points, briefs, or stimuli. From this paper, learners are required to select one option, for which they will craft a suitable personal response to be assessed.
