Vision Statement

The hospitality sector is the third largest employer in the UK. The vision for WJEC Hospitality and Catering is to develop students who have the skills to excel in this sector. The curriculum starts by ensuring students have an appreciation of the importance of food hygiene and health and safety, as part of their induction students will complete their industry standard CIEH Introductory Food Hygiene Certificate. Across the year, students will also complete inductions in the basic skills required in back of house (catering) and front of house (hospitality service) practical sessions. During Year 10 they will combine this experience with their theoretical understanding of nutrition, dietary needs, catering operations, and menu planning to complete their Unit 2 Hospitality and Catering in Action controlled assessment (60% of course).

In Year 11 students will further explore types of hospitality and catering provision, job roles in the sector, meeting customer needs, and legislation to prepare for their Unit 1 Hospitality and Catering Industry exam (40% of course). Through their study, students will foster a greater understanding of how the theory and practical experience inform each other. They will develop team working, communication, time management, leadership and customer service skills; which will serve them well for a career or part-time work in the sector and provide them with essential transferable employability skills.

The WJEC Level 1 / 2 Vocational Award is an excellent route into further catering study. It is also a natural route into studying Business subjects in our 6th form.
