Vision Statement

At KS4 students follow the Eduqas Design and Technology GCSE syllabus. During the initial 2 modules in Year 9, students complete a skills-based communications project and an iterative design project. This recaps from the learning in KS3 as well as developing more technical skills to use independently. Key Stage Four projects allow students to have a more iterative approach to their learning which continues into their NEA submission for their GCSE controlled assessment. In Year 10, students begin their NEA. From the implementation of knowledge and skills learnt in KS3/Early KS4, students develop the acquired skills suitable to tackle this individual design and make project. Within this portfolio of work, students will choose their brief based on the wider influences within the subject including historical, social, cultural, environmental, sustainable and economic factors.

Learners will develop their woodworking skills to design and manufacture a storage product. They will develop their knowledge of Timbers, their properties, manufacturing techniques and finishes. They will develop the appropriate skills in preparation for year 11 Component 2 to manufacture a prototype.

Batch Production

Learners will work in teams to develop 3 identical toys that include a mechanism. They must work collaboratively and iteratively to produce the design in response to a brief.

Biomimicry project

Learners will prepare for the Component 2 NEA by completing a small design project based on the context “Biomimicry”. They will design in response to a problem highlighted by a client and take an iterative approach to solving the problem.

Component 2 NEA: Researching the context

Learners will be given a context to explore by the exam board. They will identify a problem they need to solve and highlight a client to research thoroughly to gain clear understanding of their needs and wants.
