Vision Statement

As a department, and through the BTEC Tech Award in Sport, we aim to build a love and passion for sport and physical activity. This will be achieved through developing students knoweldge and understanding of sport science concepts, whilst also allowing students to develop their practical sport and coaching skills.

The sports industry is an exciting field with opportunities in a variety of roles, ranging from sports coaching, sports therapy, sports management to name a few. We aim for students to be able to successfully transition into a sport based course at sixth form level and to continue their journey towards careers in the sports industry or further education.

Component 1: Preparing Participants to Take Part in Sport and Physical Activity

This component will explore the different types of sport and physical activity available for different types of participants. You will also learn about the potential barriers to participation and ways to overcome these. This component will lead to learning about how to prepare participants for exercise and you will demonstrate your leadership skills through the delivery of a warm up.

This component will be assessed through coursework completion at the end of the unit.

Component 2: Taking Part and Improving Other Participants Sporting Performance

This component will develop your knowledge of components of fitness and their effect on performance. You will also develop your own practical sports performance through a series of specialised drills and training. Finally, you will plan and deliver a sport coaching session, demonstrating the knowledge of training methods and drills.

This component will be assessed through coursework completion at the end of the unit.

Component 3: Developing Fitness to Improve Other Participants Performance in Sport and Physical Activity

This component will develop your understanding of the importance of fitness and the different types of fitness for performance in sport and physical activity. You will explore both physical and skill related components of fitness and understand their importance in specific sporting activities. You will also develop an understanding of the body and fitness testing protocols with the aim of improving fitness through specialised training methods.

This component will be assessed through a 1.5 hour external examination at the end of the two year course.
