Vision Statement

This course has been designed to give learners access to their next stage of education and beyond. Students will have the opportunity to develop applied knowledge and understanding of child development and growth up to the age of five, how children learn through play and how meeting the needs of individual children will support their development, play and learning. Students will develop the skills needed to plan and adapt play opportunities suitable for young children across five different areas of development. Students are given opportunities to apply their learning to case studies and will ascertain key skills to support their preparation for KS5.

Component 1: Children’s Growth and Development (Internally assessed)

Students will investigate the factors affecting growth and development of children from birth to five years old. They will cover five different areas of development; physical, cognitive, language, social, and emotional.

Component 2: Learning Through Play (Internally assessed)

Students will develop an understanding of different stages and types of play and how play activities can influence children’s learning between the ages of birth and five years old.

Continuing their studies of component 2 students will consider the different types of play in which children engage, and how activities can support children’s learning and progress across the five areas of development.
