Curriculum Vision
The Walsall Academy curriculum is designed as an 11-18 journey with learners developing skills and knowledge both in and out of the classroom. The curriculum model aims to meet the current and future local employment need and be broad and balanced, with core values of character education taught through discreet lessons, weaved into academic learning and co-curricular activities, with a focus on students becoming leaders of their own learning.
KS4 pathways are designed to enable all learners to progress and achieve in preparation for post 16 academic and vocational routes. Students are encouraged to increasingly become independent learners and further extend and develop academic abilities and personal attributes.
Key Stage 4 Curriculum
At Key Stage 4 the curriculum becomes increasingly individualised, with students studying on different curriculum pathways. The key aims of the Key Stage 4 curriculum align with the Key Stage 3 curriculum, to develop skills and character as well as knowledge. The Key Stage 4 curriculum aims to ensure students attain appropriate skills, knowledge and qualifications so that they can pursue relevant and interesting career pathways. The use of visits to engage learners also builds and continues.
The curriculum pathways on offer to students at Key Stage 4 was redesigned in 2023 and implemented in 2024. The aim of the curriculum pathways is to ensure suitable and ambitious curriculum programmes for a wide range of ability levels, students are directed to one of four pathways. Highly academic students can opt to study Triple Science, Computer Science, GCSE Business, dual Humanities. Students focussed on passing GCSE English and Maths can select a more vocational programme.
The EBacc is at the heart of the Key stage 4 curriculum, the majority of students study the EBacc suite of subjects with an additional two subject choices from a diverse range of options.
Character education is taught through discreet lessons, weaved into academic learning and co-curricular activities, with a focus on students becoming leaders of their own learning.
RSE is taught through discrete lessons and age appropriate sessions as well as being embedded across the curriculum.
