WA LogoWalsall Academy in Bloxwich, Walsall opened in September 2003. The total student enrolment is around 1360 with approximately 320 students in the Sixth Form. The School was one of a number of City Academies established in England prior to the expansion of the Academies Programme in 2010 and was originally sponsored by The Mercers’ Company of the City of London and Thomas Telford School.

We are part of the Thomas Telford Multi Academy Trust.

We have designed a school and curriculum which make learning and teaching stimulating and enjoyable. We offer first class facilities, state of the art ICT and the opportunity to specialise in more Technology, Science and Performing Arts alongside the National Curriculum.

Our Sixth Form is thriving and we provide a wide range of academic and work-related courses for students of all abilities, including technical T Levels from 2022.

The Arts and Sport play an important role in the life of the academy. We want to give our students different opportunities to develop the confidence to express themselves and ignite the all-important spark for success.

The more we expect of our young people the more they will achieve.

Ethos and Values

The key aim of the Academy is to educate to the best of our abilities to get the most important outcome possible: A happy and enjoyable child with the skills and qualifications to succeed in life.

Our Sponsors (2003-2017)

The Mercers’ Company and Thomas Telford School have generously funded the school in joint partnership with the Government. This means that the Academy can provide non-fee paying education to all the students.

The Mercers’ Company of the City of London

The Mercers’ Company, the premier Livery Company of London, had its first charter granted by Richard III in 1394 but its origins are much older. Best known Mercers’ include Sir Richard (Dick) Whittington, Sir Thomas Gresham and Sir Thomas Moore. Since ceasing to act as an association of merchants in overseas trade the Company has developed into a charitable and educational foundation.

Thomas Telford School

One of fifteen City Technology Colleges, part of the Specialist Schools Programme which opened in September 1991. Sponsored by The Mercers’ Company and Tarmac Group Ltd it was the first comprehensive school where 100% of students achieved 5+ GCSE grades at A*- C. Thomas Telford has developed On-Line Learning Courses in ICT for use nationwide and its involvement in the Walsall Academy is an example of the School’s commitment to education in the West Midlands.
